Drunk Gambler: Casino to blame for $500K loss

KYUNG LAH IS OUT FRONT.>>THEY SERVED ME ALL THE DRINKS, THEY SHOULD HAVE CUT ME OFF. >>Reporter: A WILD WEEKEND IN SIN CITY BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO MARK JOHNSTON DIDN’T STAY IN VEGAS. HE LOST $500,000 GAMBLING. AND HE SAYS IT WASN’T HIS FAULT.>>JUST PICTURE A DRUNK WALKING DOWN THE STREET AND HE’S DRUNK AND SOMEBODY GOES UP AND JUST PICK POCKETS HIM AND TAKES HIS WALLET OUT OF HIM. THAT’S HOW I CHARACTERIZE IT. >>YOU FEEL LIKE THEY’RE STEALING FROM YOU?>>ABSOLUTELY. >>Reporter: THEY IS THE DOWNTOWN GRAND CASINO. IN A CIVIL LAWSUIT HE CLAIMS THAT THE CASINO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HIM. ACCORDING TO JOHNSTON’S LAWSUIT HE WAS SO INVISIBLY INTOXICATED HE WAS DROPPING CHIPS ON THE FLOOR AND CONFUSING CHIP COLORS AND SLURRING HIS SPEECH BADLY AND UNABLE TO READ HIS CARDS. HE SAID HE HAD A 44-HOUR GAP IN MEMORY THAT HE CALLS “THE BLACKOUT PERIOD.” HOW MUCH DOES HE CLAIM HE DRANK? 20 ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN 17 HOURS. THAT’S ON TOP OF THE APPROXIMATELY TEN DRINKS HE SAID HE CONSUMED BEFORE HE EVEN STEPPED INTO THE CASINO. HOW IS THAT THE CASINO’S FAULT? JOHNSTON SAYS THAT THE DOWNTOWN GRAND CONTINUED TO SERVE HIS FREE DRINKS VIOLATING NEVADA STATE LAW FORBIDDING COMPING DRINKS TO PATRONS THAT ARE VISIBLY DRUNK AND THEN LETTING THEM BALGAMBLE. HOW DO YOU VIEW THAT WEEKEND NOW?>>MY RESPONSIBILITY IS, I HAD A FEW DRINKS THAT AIRPORT AND HAD A DRINK ON THE PLANE. YOU KNOW, AT SOME POINT, THAT’S MY RESPONSIBILITY. OKAY, BUT, THE UNFORTUNATE PART ABOUT IT FOR THEM IS THAT THEY HAVE A MORE BIGGER RESPONSIBILITY THAN I DO.>>Reporter: THE STATE GAMING COMMISSION TELLS CNN IT IS INVESTIGATING JOHNSTON’S CASE AND IF THE CASINO IS IN VIOLATION OF STATE LAWS, IT COULD BE SUBJECT TO FINES OR REVOCATION OF HIS GAMBLING LICENSE. THE CASINO HAD NO COMMENT SAYING IT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAWSUIT WITH JOHNSTON. AS FAR AS JOHNSTON? WE CHATTED NEXT TO HIS $250,000 MERCEDES. HE SAYS HIS LAWSUIT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY. COME ON, THIS IS VEGAS. YOU GAMBLED WITH THE MONEY. IS THIS A SORE LOSER?>>I AM NOT A SORE LOSER. I HAVE LOST $500,000. I’VE LOST $800,000. I’VE LOST A LOT OF MONEY AND I’VE WON A LOT OF MONEY. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. OBVIOUSLY, I CAN

  1. When do people take a hint of a degree of responsibility for themselves. They didn't pour it down his throat & he was sober showing up to Vegas with 500k. Just a alcoholic degenerate gambler.

  2. That's why it's called Gambling… Would he be complaining if he woke up with a terrible hangover, and found himself 5000K Richer? I don't think so…. That happen to me back in 1998 at Trump Casino in Atlantic City. I was shooting Craps. AND I DON'T EVEN REALLY KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!! I started out with $200,00 dollars that I said "I was going to lose" because I was just there to have fun. Got Drunk.. The last amount I actually remember winning was $2000,00 Got even Drunker… Woke up in The Morning laying in $100 dollar bills on my Hotel Bed. When I counted it out? It was over 23K.. It was the Best Hangover I ever had.. The Casino Continued to Invite me back for at least 3 years after that. Ain't been back since… I feel you've just got to know when to TAKE THE MONEY AND HAUL ASS.. I'll NEVER GAMBLE LIKE THAT AGAIN. I feel I was just lucky that night. I could have ended up dead  from being robbed… I was so Damn Drunk…

  3. You should know what you're getting yourself into when you step into a casino. There's a reason the drinks are FREE when  you're playing! It's a business. They're thirsty for people like him….

  4. There's an old phrase, "no such thing as a free lunch" or in this case free drinks. The casinos ply try to you with free liquor so you bet high and impair your judgement so you don't quit when (or if) your ahead then the odds are greatly against you to begin with.

When I went to Vegas in February, I only bet what I knew I could lose and turned down the drinks after a few because I knew it would start to impair my judgement. I won enough money to have pretty good dinners and see a few shows, but I didn't lose my shirt because I knew that it would be foolish to bet that much. He should have known better.

  5. Grown men don't need to be baby sat, if you have a drinking problem that is your fault, & no one else.

  6. what a stupid idiot this guy is. you hear it every day and still some people go into casinos, drunk as shit and don't even think for a moment, what they are doing. it's his fault and he shouldn't blame it on the casino. DON'T GAMBLE DRUNK, it's that easy.

  7. CNN should sue the casinos for losing TV viewers, and place the blame on a night of debauchery with strippers, booze, and cocaine.

  8. If he took loans from the casino, and was drunk off his face, then any contract he signed is void. But he'd need to prove legal incompetence.

  9. His incompetence of gambling while drinking doesn't get my sympathies. He wasn't to drunk to keep asking for a loan. You have to do paperwork before you start taking loans out.

  10. I wonder if he had won big that night would the casino have sued him,I think not,no symphony for this guy

  12. Well there will be some evidence like security cameras show how drunk he is , I’m sure there is something to prove
